Late birdie earns Peter weekend start

peter_australian_pga_resized_anthony_powter.jpgA second round of 71 has Peter well inside the cut line at the Verizon Heriatge Classic at Harbour Town Links, a late birdie ensuring he would make the weekend and create the opportunity to continue the momentum his game has been building in recent weeks.

After his opening round of 1 over 72 had him requiring something better from his afternoon tee time in round two, Peter dropped a shot at the very first hole when he found trouble from the tee and was forced  to lay up with his second. He bounced back with birdies at the two par fives on the front nine, the 2nd and the 5th but bogies at the 8th and 9th had him making the turn at 2 over for the tournament.

He reeled off a series of pars over the next few holes but with the potentially dangerous finishing holes to come then he needed a cushion to secure weekend work. That cushion would come at the par three 17th when he holed from 30 feet behind the flag and he walked ot the 18th one shot inside the looming cutline of 2 over. Despite missing the green at the last Peter was still able to save par with a seven footer.

At 1 over Peter is in a share of 48th position.

Peter returns to scene of PGA Tour victory

pete2.jpgPeter is on Hilton Head Island this week for the Verizon Heritage Classic, the event he won four years ago in a final round tussle with Darren Clarke.

After a week back home in Orlando Peter is back and rearing to go on a golf course that has meant so much to him but one that enjoys for the shear quality of the layout. "The small greens and tight turning fairways make this a real test and the layout is often firm at this event to place even more demands on your game," said Peter. "You would struggle to find someone who does not enjoy playing this course."

"While my record to date this year might not suggest such I am not playing all that badly and hopefully a return to Harbour Town will kick start my season. I had a tough day on the last day in Houston but in the earlier rounds I had played ok so I'm not all that far from where I need to be.

I spent last week practising my butt off after almost getting it together in Houston. Except for a  couple of poor drives that led to triples, it was definitely much better.

I have done a lot of work with the driver in the past few months and now feel like I have it worked out.

The weather this week looks as if it will be good and the course is in perfect condition. I am now looking forward to the next four weeks on the road."

Some good some bad in Houston
Written by Bruce Young
Monday, 06 April 2009

After several good signs early in the week at the Shell Houston Open Peter has battled on day four and has finished with a final round of 78 for 52nd position.

After returning to complete his third round early on Sunday Peter finished with a round of 68 before heading back out again. An early birdie at his first hole of round three had him at 7 under for the tournament and at that stage not all that far from contention.

A triple bogey at his 9th hole (the dangerous par four 18th) after pulling his te shot into the water saw him turn in 38 and things would go from bad to worse over the closing 9 holes with yet another triple bogey at the 6th after a wild drive there.

Peter actually had a good week with his iron play finishing in second position in greens hit but his putting was a bit of a mess especially on day four although the windy conditions did not make things easy on the greens.

Peter will take this week off as the Masters is played and then return for the Verizon Heritage event starting on April 16th at Hilton Head. Peter won the Verizon in 2005.

Big improvement for Peter in Houston
Written by Bruce Young
Sunday, 05 April 2009

A much improved performance by Peter in round two of the Shell Houtson Open has seen him safely make the cut at the event being played at the Redstone Golf Club's Tournament Course.

After an opening round of 73 Peter was forced to wait until Saturday morning to start his second round following the disruption caused by the winds of Thursday. He opened with a bogey in round two after finding the greenside bunker with his approach but then quickly added birdies at the 2nd and 4th.

Disaster struck at the par four 7th when he missed the fairway right, was forced to take a penalty drop, missed the green with his third and then took four to get down from the edge of the green and finished with a triple bogey.  He responded with a bomb from 50 feet or so at the 6th and then after making the turn in 37, was home in 32 for a round of 69. With the cut falling at 1 under Peter's total of two under had him inside the cutline.

Seven birdies in round two has provided a bost for Peter as he heads into the final two rounds.

Early tee time on day one at Houston Open

With genuine signs of improvement coming in the final round of last week's Arnold Palmer Championship, Peter is in Houston this week for the Shell Houston Open at the Tournament Course at the Redstone Golf Club.

Peter has played this relatively new venue on only two occasions and has missed the cut both times so with a week off next week while the Masters is played he will be keen to have his game continuing its forward momentum prior to taking a break. Of course a win this week would change all that as this week's winner gets a start next week.

Peter however would be pleased just for his game to be moving in the right direction and with an early (7.30am) tee time on day one then he has the chance to make a good start to the event.
