chances dwindling for Peter

It doesn't take a Rhodes Scholar to work out just what Peter needs to do in either this week's Viking Classic or the final event on the year, the Children's Miracle Network Classic, in order for him to have full status on the PGA Tour in 2010.

With the likelihood of  a figure around US$720,000 or thereabouts needed in order for him to break into the top 125 and retain his PGA Tour playing rights, Peter therefore needs to earn US$400,000 or so in the remaining events to reach that mark.

This week's Viking Classic in Madison in Mississippi is the first of those two events and Peter is playing the event for just the second occasion in his career on the PGA Tour. That appearance came in 2002 when he made the cut but finished well back.

"Go like he'll is pretty much all I've got left," said Peter today. "I have just got to chip it better."

Peter loses ground in Scottsdale

Peter has made the cut at the Frys.com Open in Scottsdale but has finished well back (71st) at the completion of 72 holes. While it is good to have made another cut late in the season it is a big finish that he is looking for in these late events and with just two more before season's end this week's event, the Viking Classic in Madison is taking on even greater signficance.

Peter started the tournament solidly enough on the low scoring layout at the Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale but after  good start in round three he lost his way a little on the closing few holes for a round of 72 and then in today's final round was unable to recover from a slow start.

The one area of his game that continue's to standout is his driving where he again he was amongst the leaders in fairways hit.

Peter has never played this coming week's event previously but is clearly at a point where he must take advantge of the remaining events to secure that one big finish or ready his game for Q School.

Another big week for Peter
Written by Bruce Young

Peter is in Scottsdale, Arizona this week where he will play the Frys.com Open at the Grayhawk Golf Club for just the second occasion.

Peter finished 20th last year producing a strong weekend with rounds of 64 and 67.

There is little hiding the need for a big week this week or in his two remaining events for Peter and he will be keen to recapture the sort of golf which saw him produce a stunning final round of 63 at the Turning Stone Resort Championship before missing the cut last week in Las Vegas.

Peter faces a big task if he is to avoid Tour School, probably needing to earn around US$450,000 or more yet in the next three weeks if he is to do so.

As has often been the case in late season events, many a year has been saved by such a finishing burst and Peter is still confident he can do it.

Peter has an early tee time on day one.

Peter struggles at TPC Summerlin

It has been a disappointing week for Peter at the Justin Timberlake event in Las Vegas after his second round of 72 leaving him at 2 over for the event and well short of the required cutmark.

In Peter's defence is the fact that the TPC Summerlin is more about low scoring rather than a grinding type of layout and he will now look ahead to next week's Frys.com Open event in Scottsdale, hoping that in the three remaining events of the season he can produce the big performance he requires to regain his full status for 2010.

2009_john_deere_classic_-_m_cohen.jpgIn the leadup to this week's Justin Timberlake Shriners Childrens Hospital Championship at the TPC Summerlin near Las Vegas, Peter has expressed satisfaction at the ongoing progress he has made during his week off last week in Orlando.

"Obviously I am now in a position where I need the momentum built at the event at Turning Stone to continue but last week was productive and I felt good about the way the practice went. There is no hiding the fact that I need something special over the next few weeks but I am happy enough with the way my game feels right now."

Peter's final round of 63 at the Turning Stone Resort was a huge boost for him after what has been a year of struggle. He has this week and three more events to earn the US$475,000 or so he is likely to need to retain his current full PGA Tour status.

Peter played this event for the first occasion last year and made the cut after a good start but eventually finished 58th.
