Peter in Mexico for Mayakoba Golf Classic
Written by Bruce Young
Thursday, 22 February 2007

peter_watches_resultPeter is in Mexico this week for the Mayakoba Classic on the Caribbean Coast of that country.

The tournament, the first ever official PGA Tour event in Mexico, is being played about 45 minutes south of the Resort Centre of Cancun in an area known as Riviera Maya Cancun. The course is the El Camaleon Golf Club and is a Greg Norman designed facility opened only last year. Greg Norman's company have an involvement in the running of the event.

Peter comes of a strange last round in Los Angeles last week  where he opened with an eagle before slipping to a 74. He has been on the verge of playing well for several weeks and in an event such as this he might get his opportunity.

Peter plays with two of the fancied candidates in the event, Vaughn Taylor and Tim Herron in round one when that trio will play at 7.10am.

An opening hole eagle in today's final round of the Nissan Open at the Riviera Country Club in Los Angeles promised better things to come for Peter but his round fell away from that point on he added six bogeys and just the one birdie to finish at three over par 74.

Peter finished in 56th position and will now head to Cancun in Mexico for next week's Mayakoba Golf Classic.

Peter has finished with a second round of 70 at the Nissan Open at the Riviera Country Club near Los Angeles and has safely made the halfway cut.

After the disappointment of a double bogey to finish round one, Peter made a quick start to round two by driving the green at the reachable par five first and was soon three under through five holes of his round.

A bogey at his 6th hole (the 15th of the course) was the reuslt of a wayward drive but at his 9th hole he missed the green just left and took three to get down.

After a huge drive at his 10th hole he failed to make birdie at the par five and a series of pars followed before a birdie at the 7th from 5 feet. At the 17th he came up short with his approach from the rough and took another bogey. He was able to par the last and at 1 under for the tournament he is in 38th place.

peter_2006_chrysler_championship_michael_cohen_wireimage Peter tees it up in this week's Nissan Open at the Riviera Country Club happy with his overall game. "I played well at the FRB Open although my driving on the final day could have been better but overall I am feeling good about the form at present."

"I had to head back to Australia briefly last week as I had to get my visa sorted out. The course here is good although the greens are typical to that most on the West Coast are at this time of year with a bit of Poa in them."

Peter has played the Nissan Open on five occasions making the cut in three of those. "I love the golf course," said Peter  today. "Small greens and fairways that work either way make it a great test. The weather has been great and the greens are a little firmer at this stage than I have known them to be in previous years."

Peter will play in the afternoon group on day one with fellow Australian and previous winner, Adam Scott.

Peter has also decided to play the new event on the PGA Tour next week in Cancun in Mexico, the Mayakoba Golf Classic. Peter has not made the field for the Accentures so will play in Mexico instead.

Peter finishes 14th at FBR Open

bob_hope_chrysler_classic_jan_2007.jpg_steve_grayson_wireimage After a fast start to his final round had threatened to move him into contention at the FBR Open, Peter has evenutally finished 14th at the tournament in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Early birdies at the 2nd from 20 feet, the 4th from 10 feet and the 8th from 7 feet had Peter at three under by the turn. Peter made a great par save at the 5th after driving it in the rough and then again at the 6th after coming up just short with his approach.

At the 11th, Peter pulled his tee shot into the water, then missed the green with his third before holing a chip from just off the green for par.

His only bogey of the day came at the par four 14th after he had missed a putt from short range. One last realistic chance for birdie came at the 17th where Peter drove the green only to three putt from 90 feet or so.

All in all however it was a much better week for Peter and he will now take a one week break before returning for the Nissan Open at Riviera Country Club starting on February 15th.
