Peter only recently discovered he had a start in this event, his 2005 Presidents Cup team membership providing the chance for inclusion in this elite field. After a two week break Peter was a little unsure of what to expect this week but his performance against such a strong field and on such a tough golf course is very encouraging. "I felt as if I was playing ok despite the two week break and knew if I was able to tighten up my short game a little then I could do ok but it was still a pleasing week . I was pleased with the way the short putter worked and while it I was occasionaly twitchy with it, it can hopefully only get better. I holed a tricky five footer at the last which I knew was important given the money we were playing for and it was very satsfyiing to see it go in. I probably didn't play as well today as earlier in the week but made several really good par saves." Peter earns US$310,000 for his week's work and moves to US$1.2 million for the season. He has also made a significant move in Fed Ex Cup standings moving from 84th to 65th and increasing the likelihood of playing the latter stages of that event. Unfortunately for Peter his performance will have no impact on his chances of playing the PGA Championship next week in Tulsa as by the time entries closed he was still ineligible for a start. It will be the the first time Peter has not played the PGA since 2001. Peter will play next at the Wyndham Championship next week. Peter recovered from a slow start today when he recorded two bogies in his first three holes to steadily move through the field. He birdied the second hole after getting up and down from the left hand greenside bunker at the par five. Peter made good par saves at the 5th and 6th holes before birdies from 20 and 35 feet respectively at the 7th and 8th holes saw him turn in 34. On the way in Peter hit every green but one on the back nine but had very few makeable chances, the only realistic chance coming at the 15th which he made from ten feet. photo Marc Feldman WireImage |
